A Clinical Study on Guillain-Barre Syndrome

Abstract
An analysis of the clinical symptoms and signs of 14 patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome, who admitted to Seoul National University Hospital from 1970 to 1974, revealed the following results.
1) No sex predominance occurred, but the disease occurred most commonly in the first and second decades.
2) A higher incidence in summer months was noted.
3) About half of patients. had a history of preceding illnesses, most commonly upper respiratory infections. . ?
4) Neurological signs at the time of admission were as follows: Motor paralysis of extremities with loss of deep tendon reflexes occurred in all cases. An ascending sequence of motor deficit was usual. Paresthesia frequently preceded the onset of paralysis, but objective sensory loss was minimal or absent. The cranial nerves, respiratory muscles, and sphincter muscles were often involved.
5) The cerebrospinal fluid showed a rise in protein content except 3 cases, without any marked rise in the number of cells.
6) Glucocorticoids were administered to all patients. Two patients returned to full activity. Eight patients partially improved when last seen and three patients were unchanged. One death occurred because of respiratory paralysis.
